“God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.” Genesis 1:16 (NIV)
As I get older, scripture has a way of speaking to me in ways it never did before and that quote above from Genesis regarding the stars resonates deeply for me in my work as both a Bereavement Counselor and Executive and Career Coach.
It’s an honor to have an opportunity to walk with people on the journey from something that is “no longer” to the “not yet” that defines any transitional moment in life.
As we move through that transition whatever it may be — grieving the loss of a loved one, a job, a relationship, moving to a new locale, or an issue with one’s health — a wide range of emotions are often unleashed including feelings of anxiety, fear of the future, regret over things that happened in the past, anger, and even shame. And the challenges of living in today’s external environment can often amplify those emotions and with it comes the loss of hope for a future that someone had been planning on.
Sometimes, when I struggle with my own anxieties, disappointments, or challenges, I take a nighttime walk along the boardwalk here at the New Jersey Shore, where I live, and fondly recall the quote above from Genesis.
As I walk, I’ll look up at the sky full of shining stars with each star sending me a message from God that says clearly to me and to everyone else in the universe that “Yes, You Matter” no matter what.
Each star is a timely reminder that on those challenging days where we may be feeling lost, invisible, unsure of ourselves or the direction we are heading in, God is speaking to each of us and saying through each of those stars that “Yes, You Matter” right here, right now, just as you are. If He took the care to place each star in the heavens, how much more does He care for you?
So how about you? Can you imagine yourself looking up at the stars where God or whatever higher power you believe in gently whispers to you “I see you! I love you! You are not forgotten! You are important! You belong! Your life has meaning! Yes, You Matter.”
Love always, Dad/Papa Bear
